Disco’s Daring Birthday Dash

I had quite a fantastic idea today (no sniggering at the back)! It was rather inspired by the activities at the weekend on the Liberty Loco. My birthday is fast approaching and as some of you know I’ve spent a good part of the last year building up my running and over the last month or two preparing myself to run a marathon. If you’ve been following my running antics lately you’ll also know that I don’t actually have a marathon race to run at the moment (and probably won’t enter one until next year). The thought struck me earlier that a really cool way to mark my birthday this year would be to run 26.2 miles (for those who are numerically challenged – that’s a marathon!)…not quickly…not as a race…just run that distance for the enjoyment and just to prove to myself that I can.

Anyway after deciding to run a birthday marathon the thought quickly struck me that it will probably take me a while and I might get a bit lonely. I mean no-one wants to celebrate their birthday on their own do they? So I’m inviting you all to join me! Yes you! (friends, colleagues, family, internet friends, runners and non-runners alike)!

I’m not expecting anyone to join me for the whole 26.2 miles (although that is an option for anyone capable of that mileage) but I’ve quickly mapped out a route (napkin style) which should be roughly the required distance and I’d like you all to consider joining me for as much as or as little of the run as you want. The route will start in Dorchester and follow the new Ridgeway Road down to Littlemoor and then head out to Preston. From Preston I’ll dip down to Bowleaze Cove and then head all the way down the esplanade and around the harbour. Then it’ll be up the Rodwell Trail, past Ferry Bridge and over to Portland. Portland will be where the real challenge begins as I’m aiming to follow the coastal path around the entire island (past the lighthouses etc) and back around to Chesil Beach. At the point I get back towards the Sailing Academy (if I’m still alive) I don’t think I’ll be far from the 26.2 goal. Although I may have run around the carpark a few times. Mission accompished! Time to Party!

I have a feeling this is not going to be easy. It may take me a while and I may have to stop, re-fuel and even maybe walk some sections (especially on fraggle) but I’m willing to give it a go. I’d like all of you to run a little bit with me, whether that’s 1 mile, 5k or 10 miles. I’d appreciate the company and I’ll need the motivation. All those who take part will have my eternal gratitude and that warm fuzzy feeling they’ve made a bearded idiot very happy on his birthday. We’ll have a good laugh along the way. It’s meant to be fun.

Hopefully if I can get enough people interested I’ll have at least one person to run with most of the time. Obviously there will be post run birthday celebrations and it’d be great for all those taking part (or not) to come along and share a beer with me (it’s a birthday after all) at a yet to be named location. This mad undertaking will take some planning and logistical thought so for the moment it’d be great if you could just let me know if you are interested in taking part and I can then use that information to flesh out the details. My birthday is the 31st August but to make this feasible I am planning to run this on Saturday 1st September. Please let me know if you are interested and pencil the date into your diaries.

Dude – I’ll run at least ten with you, you knows it! The beauty is, when I’m really struggling, I’ll just give up and go home.

One condition – pub afterwards….for rehydration purposes of course!!

thanks Josh…not sure I’ll be at much of a state to be interviewed at that point (I struggle to talk while moving) but the bike company appreciated. I’ll email you over the next few days with details.
